Tip #1 – On Purpose – Be clear about what you want to accomplish
February 7th, 2011 @ admin
Guess what folks …. There is no getting away from you needing to be absolutely clear about what you want to accomplish in life and living. But since we are talking about helping you sell in a recession – let us stick to the business at hand … What are you as an individual trying to accomplish when you go about the market place selling something?
I like to get very clear about basics; so let’s say that you are an individual contributor, I would suggest that you would want to get clear about what you wanted to accomplish in terms of salary, experience, bonuses etc. In other words … how are away from pain do you want to get? You might have to make sure you are successful in a bad market, because you need the money to keep your medical insurance for yourself or a family member. Or because you have a hobby that requires the extra $400 you bring home in bonus checks every month. It might not all be financial and serious; it could just be that you have found your calling in life and there is absolutely nothing else in life you rather be doing.
Take a moment and ground yourself and your thinking. Create the space for you to assess the reasons why you might be doing what you have chosen to do; to put food on the table. The clearer you get with this, the more powerfully you will be able to conduct yourself in the market place.
The clearer you are with this sense of purpose for yourself, the more you will be able to tap into your creative genius to win in the market place.
Consider a day or a half day of Active Inactivity – where you turn your phones off, remain alone and spend the day doing absolutely nothing. Do not run errands or do anything else. Do nothing, but “Think” and “Feel” what is important to you in life.
I read a great little book years ago called ‘The Zen of Martial Arts‘ where they talked about this practice in a different way.
Simply put, if you do not know where you want to go in life, … you will never get there.
