Tip # 4 – Reach Beyond Yourself

Sticking with my first principle of Purpose, this idea of reaching beyond yourself is a powerful way to move in the market place. What I am alluding to here is that you anchor in an idea and a dream that is bigger than yourself – so that you think and behave in ways that are more effective than your normal way of behaving.

People that have children know this. I have heard it changes everything. I was reading an article about Global Warming the other day and the author said something interesting. He mentioned how he knew the trends in Global Warming when he was a University student, but at that time, the date 2050, was a distant time, which had no significant meaning on his immediate life. It was only after he had his two children that he began to reach beyond himself. That date (2050) was a date in time that would be important to his children. He was moved to action.

Grounding this idea in our simpler lives … may I suggest, you think of ideas and activity that help move you to action?

As an example, there were quite a few years when I was a selling technology in the New York / New Jersey area and during my 2 week vacation, I would travel to places like Spain, Brazil and Argentina and do volunteer work. These trips invigorated me in fantastic ways. I would not have every been able to achieve this, had I spent that time in the more conventional vacation destinations like Myrtle Beach or Ibiza.

Why do we do anything at all my friends? … I would say, dream big and reach beyond yourself, … that’s why.
